Explosion Rocks Castor

A Tuesday morning explosion and fire at Terroco A & E Oilfield Services in Castor caused several injuries and forced the evacuation of the Gus Wetter school.  The 9:30 a.m. blast occured during manufacturing and painting operations and was fought by firefighters from Castor and Coronation and was controlled by early afternoon.  A number of vehicles were destroyed, along with the structure where the explosion occured.

MLA Hayden presents cheque for $900K
MLA Jack Hayden was in Stettler on Wednesday, January 31st to present a cheque in the amount of $900,000 to the Stettler Affordable Housing Committee.  Pictured left to right, along with Mr. Hayden (second from right) are Walter Stefanik, Mayor of Big Valley, Terry Nordahl, Mayor of Donalda, Jim Hunter, Mayor of Stettler and Dick Richards, Stettler Town Councillor.  The Affordable Housing Committee is building affordable housing projects in Stettler, Big Valley and Donalda with assistance received from the Provincial Government.

Campaigners want tribute for WWII 'soldier bear'

Scottish campaigners are calling for a memorial to a bear which joined Polish troops on the front line during World War II and later died in Edinburgh, media reported.

Voytek, a 113-kilogram, 1.8-metre brown bear, was adopted by the Poles after they found it in Iran in 1943.

They gave the animal beer and cigarettes, trained it to carry mortar shells and even enlisted it as a soldier so that it could keep travelling with them.

The annual County of Stettler Community Service Awards night was held on Friday, January 18th at the Big Valley Community Hall.  The Big Valley Agricultural Society hosted the event and the Society's President, Dan Webster, acted as Master of Ceremonies.

Algae Could Be The Next Cleaner, Greener Fuel

(WCCO) A new report this week says greenhouse gas emissions could double in the next 30 years.

Not from buses and cars, but from ethanol made out of corn.

Scientists said turning forests into fields to grow fuel creates way more carbon dioxide than it saves, but with shrinking oil reserves and rising gas prices the search for a cleaner, greener fuel for transportation is critical.

However, the biofuel most likely to replace petroleum comes from the most unlikely place.
