The Alberta
government has announced a new cultural policy following its’ public
consultation on the matter last summer.  Cultural facilities may benefit Developing
capacity for cultural events and activities and enhancing access to
cultural
experiences and opportunities are main goals of the new policy.
Potential new funding for the arts and cultural facilities was part of
the announcement.

Eve Keates of Alix was honored with a Caring Canadian Award on January 17th. The award was presented to Keates by Governor General Michaelle Jean at a ceremony in Calgary. Keates was honored for her work with the Alix museum society and the Alix Agricultural society and for having helped establish the Alix food bank. Congratulations go out to Ms. Keates on her award.

Last fall the Summer of Village of Rochon Sands abandoned its' application to annex less than a quarter section of land from the County of Stettler and decided to pursue a fresh application, based on a recent growth study, to annex 450 acres from the County. As a result of abandoning the initial application, the summer village is now faced with potentially paying the County's costs that were incurred with respect to the abandoned application. The County is now seeking $46,000 in costs related to that application and Rochon Sands has until January 30th to respond to the application for costs. Both the costs application and the fresh annexation application are presently before the Municipal Government Board.

Grant funding creates bio-energy hub in Central AlbertaEdmonton... Over a half million dollars in provincial grants have been approved for three bio-energy projects in Central Alberta. The projects, located in Red Deer, Ponoka and Bentley, will explore the business potential for new facilities and expand the capacity of current ones. Combined, the three projects represent up to $108 million of new investment in the province.
